What is Unite Against Fascism?
Unite Against Fascism is a national campaign with the aim of alerting British society to the rising threat of the extreme right gaining an electoral foothold in this country, in particular the British National Party (BNP).
The BNP’s growth has been alarming, increasing from 1.1% to 8.0% between the 1999 and 2004 European elections (Yorkshire & the Humber region). They have won council seats in many parts of England and now have 54 councillors, including 7 in Yorkshire. In 2008, they won a seat on the London Assembly - the biggest every electoral breakthrough for a fascist party in Britain.
In 2009, the BNP will be trying to win a European parliament seat for the Yorkshire & the Humber region. If successful, this would aid them in their goal to become an integral part of British politics. In other parts of Europe, the rise of far-right parties has led to the adoption of deeply racist policies, for example the fingerprinting of all Roma people in Italy. It will be much easier to stop the BNP before they make a major breakthrough than to react after this has already happened. Therefore these European elections are a crucial point in our campaign.
The BNP can be defeated. The majority of people in this country abhor the BNP. If everyone votes we can stop the BNP. Our campaign will urge people to use their vote to stop the BNP.
